This experiment has evolved out of the work we've done with Burning Man Information Radio since its inception. BMIR is a tool for connecting citizens in Black Rock City; Shouting Fire is a way to connect throughout the year. It's also a forum to speak to the wider world, which could use an injection of the uncommon values that are so common within this community--values that serve as guiding principles for Shouting Fire:
- A commitment to purposeful self expression unrestricted by commercial dictates or social norms.
- A radical sense of participation and self-reliance that recognizes we must catalyze the change we seek.
- An acknowledgment that principles can also be questions. To start just with one: What might be possible when this community's collective energy is translated into the world beyond Black Rock City?
This will not be BMIR online, nor will it be a traditional online radio station. Ultimately, we envision a full service, omnimedia network for audio, video, and any other noise that's fit to burn. Shouting Fire is also not a station about Burning Man--although there will be a wealth of BRC related content, and many of our contributors will come from the Black Rock City community. Instead, it's about how revelations and inspirations from the playa are carried with us out of the desert and into our day-to-day existences.
Concerts and conversations, interviews and inner views, live events and experimental audio. And yes: "advertisements" for events and activations in your neck of the world. Our lives are the content, and almost anything goes. As long as it's audaciously playful, energizing and entertaining. Because a cardinal lesson of BRC is that embodying our ideals doesn't have to be preachy or pompous: working collaboratively to shape our realities can be artful, celebratory, engaging--and, most important, a fucking blast.
